Jim at 19, Nov. 2021
Here is Jim graduating from basic training at the age of 19 in 1982. Almost life size at 18 x 24. In the hopes of showing more detail, this was photographed outside in the shade, simply laid flat on a sheet on the back patio while I hovered over the top with the camera. My favorite part of the painting is the cap badge where I was able to get a lot of detail in looking at it in real life vs. just the small 5 x 7 photo.
Robert, Nov. 2021
Here is my second victim, Robert, when he graduated from basic training in 2013, age 26. 14 x 18 acrylic on canvas, painted November 2021. A larger size would have been easier as I had to use a toothpick to dot on the lettering.
First Portrait, 10/2021
My first portrait, and it is me as a child, about 7 or 8 years old. I'll call her Suzy Girl, my grandmother's nickname for me. A bit cartoon-ish, but its only my first. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas. Painted October 2021.
Dark Autumn, Jan 2021
Dark autumn sky, turning foliage and a messy pond. Unfortunately, the camera doesn't really capture the true colors, and is much darker than in person. 30 x 40 acrylic on deep edge canvas.
Rocky Shore, July 2020
That red buoy is warning you to stay away from the rocks. The lighthouse's horn might be sounding off as well, warning of danger. Painted July 2020. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas.
Fishing on the Shore, March 2020
This was painted March 2020, but just photographed now. No particular place, just out of my head. As usual, colors are a little different in person (frustrating). 14 x 18 acrylic on canvas.
Nobska Lighthouse, Oct. 2019
Nobska Lighthouse, built in 1876 in Falmouth, just down the road from my sister's house. 18 x 24 acrylic on canvas.
Goose Rocks Beach, Sept. 2019
Many summers spent on the beach here in Kennebunk Port, Maine. 18 x 24 acrylic on canvas.
My first nude, April 2019
My first human figure over an inch tall. 12 x 16 acrylic on canvas (the last of the cheap ones from Michael's that I will never buy again.)
Starry Night, April 2019
My version of the famous Van Gogh "Starry Night" to accompany the exploding Tardis. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas. These paintings all look so flat on the computer compared to seeing them in person where the brush strokes and layers of paint are visible.
Starry Night Over the Rhone, April 2019
My version of Van Gogh's other Starry Night painting. Don't miss the silhouettes of the boats along the shore. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas.
Starry Night Wall, April 2019
Here they are all on the office wall. It was difficult to get them all in frame in the picture in a small room. I stood in the closet to get this shot.
Exploding Tardis 3, March 2019
I had another request for the Exploding Tardis for Jim's office here at home as he is retiring soon and will be redecorating his space. Same size as the others, 2'x3', acrylic on deep edge canvas.
Cape Cod Cranberry Bog, September 2018
First painting in about a year and it's my biggest one yet at 30 x 40 inches. This is the size I want to go over the fireplace and colors I want with the red and green, but I am not satisfied with the viewpoint and will change that the next time, so I am considering this a practice painting. My sky and clouds have improved since the beginning. The photos on the computer always look a bit different than in real life. Not varnished yet, and I'm not sure I will. The next photo shows it installed over the fireplace.
Cape Cod Cranberry Bog Fireplace, September 2018
Installed over the fireplace which is just over 5' tall and 7' wide. Photo taken in natural daylight. There is a little too much sky and not enough cranberries, I think. A little too dark at the bottom. Still, not too bad for a relative beginner and my next one will be better.
Unfinished sky, ocean, beach, Sept. 2017
I needed to put something on the wall over a desk in the guest bedroom and this traveled from my mind through the brushes onto the canvas. It needs a little something more on the beach, perhaps some small boats, rocks or something, maybe something in the water towards the front, but I'm not inspired enough right now to finish it. Any suggestions? This is 2 18x24 canvases, so a total of 2'x3' when put together.
Unfinished, Sept. 2017
Here it is mounted on the wall in the guestroom in the basement. Notice the difference in light - this is an "inside cabin" with just a small window covered by drapes.
Humpback Whale, Sept. 2017
Thar she blows! Another painting inspired by the Cape Cod book. We were lucky enough to see a few humpback whales on a whale watching boat off Provincetown before moving off the cape. 14 x 18 acrylic on canvas.
Cape Cod Forest, March 2017
This is a test for what I eventually want to put over the fireplace in the living room. It's a large fireplace and mantel, and I plan on a 30x40" canvas. This test is 18x24" and once again the inspiration comes from a book of Cape Cod scenery. It's almost what I want, but needs a little less red and a lighter green back in the trees, if I want to stay true to the photograph in the book.
Clamming in Orleans, March 2017
Another painting inspired by the Cape Cod calendar. Don't miss the tiny boat between the trees. Not sure if I'm quite done, as it seems to be missing something, but it hasn't been worked on in over a week, so here it is. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas.
Exploding Tardis 2, Sept. 2016
Another Tardis painting by request. This one is for my niece who is getting married soon. She and her fiancé are big Dr. Who fans. I added a little more "fire" to this one. 24x36 acrylic on canvas.
Brant Point Lighthouse, August 2016
Brant Point Lighthouse, Nantucket. The original was built in 1746, the present lighthouse was completed in 1901 and is 26 feet high. This is the first time I photographed a painting after varnishing, and will not do that again for obvious reasons as the painting looks different in person. 16x20 acrylic.
Edgartown Lighthouse, May 2016
The Edgartown Lighthouse was built in 1938 in Ipswich and brought to Martha's Vineyard by raft, replacing an earlier lighthouse that stood on the island for more than a century. 14x18 acrylic on canvas.
Exploding Tardis, March 2016
24" x 36" acrylic on deep edge canvas. This is for Rob, a big Dr. Who fan, as we all are in the family. I used the official BBC poster as a guide, and many, many layers of paint later, here is the result. It was quite fun to paint. I even researched the numbers on the Tardis (which turned out to be time-space coordinates) since they were not legible on the poster. They aren't really legible here, either, but I squeezed them in the best I could.
Autumn Reflections, Dec. 2015
16x20 acrylic on deep edge canvas. Inspired by a photograph in a book showing beautiful scenes of Ontario. The heron is a resident at this pond in Stratford.
